Home: The Toast

Following the successful crowd-sourcing of our recent Things You Know installment, I thought it might be interesting to delve into the world of how things get done in other places that we could learn from.

Now, I’m not talking “health care” or “paid maternity leave” or “decent sandwiches on trains,” I’m talking about the small, piddly things.

To wit: Australia has the condiments game DOWN. Do you know how they dole out soy sauce at takeout places in Australia (and, you know, in Japan, but I’d always ASSUMED they had a better system in Japan, and I heard this from an Australian first)?

Little fish. You unscrew the noses from little plastic fish instead of ripping open a packet and having a salty black fluid squirt at your eyeball. You can buy them here, in case you’re in the odd habit of decanting your soy sauce for the road. Maybe bring them to your local takeout place and ask them to use them for your order, I don’t know.

But that’s not all! Look at how ketchup and mayo packets work!

They’re little cubes. You twist and squeeze and have greater control over your condiment distribution as a result.

Now, let’s hear it. What else are they doing in other places that we could use here?
